Author Susan Dragoo will speak at the Oklahoma Territorial Museum and Carnegie Library in Guthrie on August 28 at 6 p.m. She will discuss her book, “Finding the Butterfield: A Journey Through Time in Indian Territory,” and sign copies for attendees. The book, which will be available for purchase at the event, covers the journey through Choctaw and Chickasaw Nations as a passenger on the Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoach in the late 1850s, as well as modern explorations of the trail’s remnants in Oklahoma.
The Butterfield Overland Mail route operated from 1858 to 1861 as the first transcontinental stagecoach route in the United States. It stretched more than 2,800 miles from St. Louis and Memphis to San Francisco, delivering mail in under 25 days.
Susan Dragoo is an Oklahoma-based writer and photographer with a focus on regional history. Since 2016, she has retraced sections of the Butterfield Overland Mail route in southeastern Oklahoma. She also serves as president of the Oklahoma chapter of the Butterfield National Historic Trail Association.
