The Fort Gibson Historic Site announced on April 1 that it will hold its annual Spring Bake Day fundraiser on Saturday, April 18, from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the site in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma. Visitors will have the opportunity to purchase freshly baked bread prepared using traditional methods in the site’s historic bake house.
The event is intended to give attendees a taste of history while supporting ongoing activities at the site. Bread will be available on a first come, first served basis, with loaves coming out of the oven throughout the afternoon and distributed from the 1870s Hospital and Visitor Center located at 803 N. Garrison.
Preparation for Bake Day begins three days in advance as staff gradually heat the original oven built in the 1860s to avoid damage and ensure even baking temperatures. On baking day, bread dough is shaped and allowed to rise before being baked using period techniques. To maintain proper conditions inside the bake house, it remains closed until all bread has finished baking.
Loaves are offered in exchange for donations with a limit of two per adult visitor so more people can participate. The Fort Gibson Historic Site staff thanked visitors for their patience during this slow process and described it as an important tradition that provides “a delicious glimpse into the 19th century year after year.” For additional information about this event or visiting guidelines, attendees are encouraged to call 918-478-4088.
