The Fort Towson Historic Site is set to host a nighttime artillery firing event on Saturday, July 12. The event will run from 7:45 p.m. to 9 p.m., with an entry fee of $10 per person.

The evening will commence with a cannon firing at 7:45, followed by a presentation on drill procedures from the 1851 “Instructions for Mountain Artillery” manual. The program will cover topics such as safety with equipment, clothing, communication, and soldier movements. Attendees can witness another cannon firing at twilight and experience the sensory impact of a night-time artillery display.

Participants are advised to bring lawn chairs and be ready for loud sounds when the cannon is fired. Due to low lighting conditions in the outdoor area, flashlights and bug spray are recommended.

For further details, individuals can contact 580-873-2634 or email fttowson@history.ok.gov. The Fort Towson Historic Site is situated at 896 N. 4375 Rd. in Fort Towson.

The Fort Towson Historic Site operates under the Oklahoma Historical Society (OHS). The OHS aims “to collect, preserve and share the history and culture of the state of Oklahoma and its people.” Established in 1893 by members of the Territorial Press Association, it manages museums, historic sites, and affiliates statewide. Through various resources like research archives, exhibits, educational programs, and publications, OHS documents Oklahoma’s rich history. More information about OHS can be found at okhistory.org.
