The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index for June showed a slight decline, decreasing by 0.2 points to 98.6, which remains above the long-term average of 98. A notable factor in this decline was an increase in respondents reporting excess inventories. The Uncertainty Index also fell by five points to 89.
“Small business optimism remained steady in June while uncertainty fell,” said NFIB Chief Economist Bill Dunkelberg. “Taxes remain the top issue on Main Street, but many others are still concerned about labor quality and high labor costs.”
Jerrod Shouse, NFIB State Director for Oklahoma, commented on the situation for local businesses: “While the dip in certainty reflects what we’re hearing from our members across the state, there’s no doubt that small business owners are relieved by the passage and signature of the Big Beautiful Bill Act.”
Key findings from the survey included a net negative view of current inventory stocks as “too low,” with a six-point drop from May. There was also a decrease in expectations for better business conditions and higher real sales volumes.
Labor quality remained a significant concern at 16%, unchanged from May, while inflation concerns decreased slightly. Reports indicated deterioration in overall business health among respondents.
The monthly jobs report highlighted that 36% of small business owners had job openings they could not fill, an increase from May. Labor costs were cited as an increasing problem.
In terms of compensation, there was a seven-point rise in those reporting increased compensation levels since January 2020. However, plans to raise compensation saw a slight decline.
Capital outlays over the past six months dropped to their lowest level since August 2020. Spending focused primarily on new equipment and vehicles.
Reports of poor sales rose slightly after several months of stability, while inventory gains showed some decline compared to May figures.
Price increases were planned by more owners than previously reported this year, with selling prices seeing an uptick as well.
Profit trends improved marginally despite challenges such as weaker sales and rising material costs impacting profitability negatively for some businesses.
Borrowing activity increased slightly among small business owners with reports indicating higher interest rates on recent loans compared to previous attempts.
Overall expansion plans remained low historically despite a minor increase noted for June’s data collection period conducted by NFIB Research Center since its inception in 1973 through quarterly surveys initially then monthly starting from1986 onwards until present day releases every second Tuesday each month including current results gathered during last month’s cycle concluding now shared
