The Oklahoma Historical Society announced on Mar. 31 that the annual Oklahoma History Symposium will take place on Saturday, May 2, at the Oklahoma History Center in Oklahoma City. The event is open to scholars, students, educators, public history professionals, and members of the public interested in state history.
The symposium aims to bring together people from across the region to discuss significant milestones in Oklahoma’s past. Attendees can expect sessions covering topics such as Vietnamese refugee resettlement in western Oklahoma, the impact of the 14th Amendment, underground newspapers at Central State College, and pharmacists during the territorial period. Registration details and a full schedule are available online.
The keynote speaker will be Glenn English, retired CEO of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association and former U.S. representative from Oklahoma’s Sixth Congressional District. Additional activities include a book signing with Dr. Donald Fixico—recently inducted into the Oklahoma Historians Hall of Fame—and authors Rachel Caroline Eaton’s family and Randy Krehbiel. Copies of their books will be available for purchase at the event.
Participation is free but requires advance online registration. Attendees may attend any session or meeting throughout the day and have access to food trucks on-site or may bring their own meals.
According to the official website, the Oklahoma Historical Society preserves and interprets historic sites across the state while providing educational resources and public access to collections. The society operates its primary museum and research facility—the Oklahoma History Center—and focuses on collecting, preserving, interpreting, and disseminating information about state history according to its official website. It serves as both a statewide agency for historical matters and publishes books through its press while offering educational programs.
Any views expressed during symposium sessions do not necessarily represent those of the organizing society.
