Amazon received $11 million in subsidies, tax breaks, and grants from Oklahoma communities for five projects.
Advocacy group Good Jobs First, which opposes such subsidies, found Oklahoma provided the 30th-highest amount of grants and breaks among U.S. states to the nearly $1-trillion company.
Oklahoma is ranked behind Colorado (9 projects/$16 million) and ahead of Utah (3 projects/$10 million), Delaware (2 projects/$8 million), and Minnesota (1 project/$6 million).
The two largest subsidies provided in Oklahoma were from the Cleveland government, totaling $4 million in tax abatements over two years.
There were no developments which received undisclosed subsidy amounts.
Oklahoma is hospitable for companies due to low taxes rates and offered subsidies. This is why many energy and motor vehicle companies have headquarters in Oklahoma.
Unlike many other states, Oklahoma's largest state subsidy program provides nearly $54 million in cash to companies to create jobs, rather than providing a tax break or credit.
As of Nov. 17, 2022, Amazon had received 310 separate tax break deals from local and state governments across the U.S., totaling $5.14 billion. The state of Virginia was home to the largest portion of these taxpayer-subsidized Amazon projects.
