No. 2 ranked Southern Arkansas took advantage of a pair of miscues by Northeastern State and edged the RiverHawks 3-2 on Sunday evening.
The contest was an early test for NSU to face a Muleriders squad that reached the College World Series last season.
In the first, a two-out NSU error allowed SAU to take the early lead. An inning later, the Muleriders drew a bases-loaded walk to extend their lead to pair.
Isaiah Keller, who had two of the RiverHawks' six hits, singled to center in the fifth and swiped second and third. DeClaudio Irvin scored Keller on a ground ball out for his fifth RBI of the weekend.
Southern Arkansas (2-0) grabbed an insurance run in the seventh after a two-out balk allowed a runner to move to scoring position. The Muleriders took advantage and hit a single to center.
Northeastern State threatened in the ninth and opened the frame with back-to-back singles. C.D. White would be scored on a Coby Tweten infield out to get NSU within one. With a runner at second, Keller followed up with a single, and the potential tying run would be called out at third to end the game.
Lee Callison (0-1) went six innings, allowing four hits and striking out five batters. Gage Fuller and Cole White tossed an inning out of the bullpen.
