The Fort Gibson Historic Site in Oklahoma is set to unveil a new exhibit on November 16, focusing on the history of Freedmen in Indian Territory. This exhibit will explore a significant period in the late 1800s when formerly enslaved individuals traveled to Fort Gibson for enrollment in the Dawes Rolls.

The exhibit features photographs curated with the help of Freedmen descendants, capturing moments from this historical event. During that time, Captain McKennon established an office at Fort Gibson to enroll people who had been enslaved in Indian Territory. A community formed as these individuals waited, allowing them to reconnect with friends, trade goods, and participate in gatherings. Photographers documented these proceedings through images that are now part of the exhibit.

The exhibit will be available for viewing until the end of February. Visitors can learn more by contacting 918-478-4088 or visiting the site at 907 N. Garrison Ave., Fort Gibson.

Funding for this exhibit comes partly from Oklahoma Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities. It is noted that any opinions expressed do not necessarily reflect those of these organizations.

Fort Gibson Historic Site operates under the Oklahoma Historical Society (OHS), which aims to collect, preserve, and share Oklahoma's history and culture. Established in 1893 by members of the Territorial Press Association, OHS manages various museums and historic sites across Oklahoma. More information about OHS can be found at www.okhistory.org.
