The Fort Towson Historic Site in Oklahoma is set to host an educational event on March 6. The event, titled "Living History Education Day," will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is open to the public free of charge.
Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about life at Fort Towson during the 1840s when it served as a crucial resupply point for soldiers involved in the Mexican-American War. Reenactors dressed in period clothing will demonstrate historical tools, participate in encampment activities, and camp in period tents. The event will feature demonstrations of blacksmithing, military drills, and domestic skills such as laundry.
A notable highlight is the history of the sutler’s store, which was an essential source of goods for soldiers and local towns until the fort closed in 1854.
While the event is open to everyone, groups are required to register beforehand. For more details or to register, interested parties can contact 580-873-2634 or email fttowson@history.ok.gov. The historic site is located at 896 N. 4375 Rd., Fort Towson.
The Fort Towson Historic Site operates under the Oklahoma Historical Society (OHS), whose mission is "to collect, preserve and share the history and culture of the state of Oklahoma and its people." Established in 1893 by members of the Territorial Press Association, OHS oversees various museums and historic sites across Oklahoma. Further information about OHS can be found at www.okhistory.org.
