On February 15, Honey Springs Battlefield in Checotah, Oklahoma, will host an event featuring living historian Jim Spillars. From 1 to 2 p.m., Spillars will portray General James Blunt and deliver a presentation on Blunt's leadership during the Battle of Honey Springs. The battle was the largest among over 107 documented hostile encounters in Indian Territory. For the event, Spillars will wear period Civil War attire.
General Blunt was known for his roles as a ship captain, physician, and abolitionist. He led Indigenous and Black troops to victory at Honey Springs, aiding in bringing part of Indian Territory under Union control.
Jim Spillars is recognized for his extensive work studying and portraying General Blunt and has served as president of the Washington County Historical Society in Arkansas.
