Keys Public Schools teacher Lisa Burton is set to receive the William D. Pennington Award at the Oklahoma Historical Society's annual awards banquet. The event will take place on Thursday, March 20, at 6 p.m. at the Oklahoma History Center in Oklahoma City. Burton will be honored with a $500 prize and a plaque.
Steven Goss, high school principal for Keys Public Schools, nominated Burton for the award. He praised her ability to create "an environment where all perspectives are valued" and noted that she brings history to life for her students, fostering "a deep connection to the material." Goss emphasized Burton’s “dedication and multifaceted contributions make her an invaluable asset to her students and community.”
The William D. Pennington Award recognizes exceptional social studies teachers who demonstrate effective teaching practices.
Tickets for the banquet can be purchased online, with RSVPs requested by Monday, March 10. Dr. AJ Griffin will deliver the keynote address. Griffin has experience in the Oklahoma State Senate and currently serves as CEO of the Potts Family Foundation. Joe Dorman, former state representative and current CEO of the Oklahoma Institute for Child Advocacy, will emcee the event.
