The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) and Oklahoma Turnpike Authority (OTA) observed a moment of silence in memory of transportation workers who died while working to enhance the state's infrastructure. Held on Friday morning, the ceremony united those recognizing the impact and lives of lost workers. Tim Gatz, ODOT Executive Director, and Joe Echelle, OTA Executive Director, addressed attendees, acknowledging the dedication of these individuals.

The event took place at ODOT's central office, featuring a reading of the names of 73 workers who died on the job. The ceremony underscored the significance of safety in construction zones.

Gatz stressed the necessity of promoting safety within the industry, stating, “Each life lost is a tragedy that affects families, friends and colleagues. We will continue to advocate for safety measures that protect the lives of those who work tirelessly on our roads. These men and women are dedicated to ensuring that our roads are safer for everyone. We urge all drivers to slow down and be alert as they approach work zones this summer, and every day."

Echelle expressed his gratitude for the service of the fallen workers, adding, “Every day, the men and women who work on our highways and roads put their lives at risk to ensure our communities are connected. Today, we honor the memory of those we have lost and continue our commitment to making Oklahoma’s roads safer for everyone.”

The event was aligned with National Work Zone Awareness Week, observed April 21-25, which highlights the risks in highway construction zones and urges drivers to exercise caution.

The deaths of these 73 individuals highlight the dangers faced by workers maintaining and improving Oklahoma’s transportation network. With over 100 highway work zones anticipated this summer, along with temporary maintenance zones, crews will work in high-traffic areas under various conditions to maintain the highways.

The gathering served as a reminder of the continued sacrifices by ODOT and OTA employees. It concluded with a call for increased awareness of Oklahoma’s work zones.

Footage from the ceremony is available on ODOT’s Event Channel. More information on contributing to road safety can be found at drivesafelyoklahoma.com.
