Libero Marta Pecalli of The University of Tulsa volleyball team was named the American Athletic Conference's Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Outside hitter Kayley Cassaday was named to the AAC's weekly honor roll.
Pecalli, a 5'5" sophomore from Trieste, Italy, powered the Golden Hurricane defense at the Oral Roberts Golden Eagle Classic over the weekend by recording 70 digs at 6.36 digs per set while finishing with a .925 reception percentage. She had a weekend-high 28 digs against cross-town rival Oral Roberts.
Pecalli was named Tournament MVP for her efforts in helping Tulsa become the outright winner of the tournament. The Hurricane took down UTEP, Oral Roberts and Abilene Christian, dropping only two sets along the way.
Cassaday reprised her role as the Hurricane's go-to hitter. She recorded 50 kills during the weekend and led the team with 4.55 kills per set and 5.23 points per set. She had more total attacks (152) than any other player in the tournament. She was also named to the All-Tournament Team along with teammate Avery Kalsu.
Tulsa will travel to Waco, Texas to play in the Baylor Invitational this Thursday, September 15, and Friday, September 16.
