The Friends of Fort Gibson Foundation has announced the receipt of a $1,500 grant from Oklahoma Humanities. This funding supported the "Dawes Commission in Indian Territory: Cherokee Freedman" exhibit at the Fort Gibson Historic Site, enhancing community access to humanities resources.
In collaboration with the Oklahoma Historical Society, additional funds and staff were provided to complete this project. The exhibit will remain open through February and is expected to become an annual feature due to this partnership.
Jennifer Frazee, director of Fort Gibson Historic Site, expressed enthusiasm about the grant's impact. "We are thrilled to receive this grant," she said. "Grants like these help us share little-known history in engaging ways and allow us to make sure Oklahoma history is preserved for generations to come."
The Fort Gibson Historic Site is located at 803 N. Garrison Ave., Fort Gibson. Funding for this program was partially provided by Oklahoma Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities. It is noted that any views or conclusions expressed do not necessarily reflect those of these organizations.
Oklahoma Humanities aims to strengthen communities by fostering understanding through humanities disciplines such as history and literature. As a state partner for the National Endowment for the Humanities, it offers educational resources including magazines and cultural exhibits.
The Fort Gibson Historic Site operates under the Oklahoma Historical Society, which focuses on preserving and sharing Oklahoma's history since its founding in 1893.
