Avery Ashley and Sophia Smith from Oklahoma City University took all-American acclaim in the NAIA women's wrestling championships Friday at Harold Newman Arena.
Ashley and Smith will compete in the consolation semifinals for the Stars when the tournament resumes 10 a.m. Saturday.
Ashley moved past the consolation quarterfinals with a 19-6 victory over Katherine Heath from Baker (Kan.). Ashley, a freshman from Lucas, Texas, majoring in university studies, advanced in the consolation bracket by rolling to a 14-3 win over Marissa Ritchie of Vanguard (Calif.). Ashley (24-5) rebounded from a first-round loss in the tournament and will face Alexis Medina of Cumberlands (Ky.) in her upcoming contest.
Smith blanked Arianna Maruffo of Jamestown (N.D.) 11-0 in the consolation bracket, setting up a showdown with Missouri Valley's Ashley Whetsel in the consolation semifinals. Smith, a junior philosophy major from Janesville, Wis., has a 2-1 mark in the tournament, improving to 23-9 on the season. Smith won 10-0 over Olivia Mottley of Life (Ga.) in her first bout of the day.
