Two farms in Garfield County have been recognized with the Oklahoma Centennial Farm award, as announced by Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer Lynda Ozan. The award honors properties that have been owned and operated by the same family for at least a century.
Mark Harman's Home Place Landes|Harman farm, located near Garber, has been in his family since 1910. The land was originally settled by his great-grandfather John S. Landes and has been used to grow wheat, beans, and corn.
Greg and Christine Kokojan own Kokojan Farm near Waukomis. Their family has cultivated wheat and raised cattle on the property since it was settled by great-grandfather Joseph Kokojan in 1893.
To be eligible for a Centennial Farm or Ranch Award, a property must be occupied by a family member for at least 100 years and currently operated or leased out by a family member. It must also include at least 40 acres and generate gross annual sales of $1,000 or more. The awards are sponsored by the Oklahoma Historical Society and the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry. Over the past 35 years, 159 awards have been presented in Garfield County.
