A new exhibit titled "Abandoned Oklahoma: Red Carpet Country Through the Lens" is now open at The Chisholm in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. This year-long display features a collection of black-and-white photographs depicting Kingfisher County's historical landscapes and structures. Captured by Michael Louthan, these images showcase the region’s history and offer insights into the lives of early settlers in northwest Oklahoma.
Louthan, who retired from the communications industry and is an alumnus of Phillips University, serves on The Chisholm's board. His work captures the essence of homes and farms built over a century ago, reflecting the aspirations of those who started farming and ranching in the area during the 19th century.
The exhibit will be available to visitors until December 20. It is part of a project funded by Oklahoma Arts Sector ARPA Grants, with contributions from state leaders, the Oklahoma Arts Council, Allied Arts of OKC, and Arts Alliance Tulsa.
Located at 605 Zellers Ave., The Chisholm functions as an affiliate of the Oklahoma Historical Society (OHS). OHS was founded in 1893 with a mission to preserve and share Oklahoma's history through museums, historic sites, research archives, exhibits, educational programs, and publications.
