Fort Towson Historic Site will host a "History Day Camp" for children aged nine to 13, from May 27 to May 29, offering a blend of physical and experiential learning activities. Each day will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the site.
The program aims to immerse participants in the early to mid-19th century lifestyle, guided by historical interpreters. Camp activities include archaeology, military drills, traditional games, and crafts, enhancing engagement with history. Additionally, the camp will cover 19th-century communication, period artillery, and nature appreciation.
Participants will experience bread-making in a historical context, crafting various items, engaging in art projects, card games, and viewing educational videos during lunch.
Registration is limited to 15 students and operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested parties can register by contacting 580-873-2634, emailing fttowson@history.ok.gov, or visiting the Fort Towson Historic Site. "This is a FREE camp thanks to a grant from the Carolyn Watson Rural Oklahoma Community Foundation," as stated in the announcement. The application deadline is May 3.
