An Oklahoma Centennial Farm award has been bestowed upon the owners of a farm in Alfalfa County, as announced by Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer Lynda Ozan. The award was given to Brian and Kathy Gordon, proprietors of Hickman & Gordon Farm near Alva.
The farm has been under family operation since 1924 when Claude Hickman, the grandfather of the current owners, settled on the land. Since then, the family has engaged in growing wheat and hay and raising cattle.
To be eligible for a Centennial Farm or Ranch Award, a property must have been occupied by a family member for at least a century and currently operated or leased by a family member. The property must also include at least 40 acres with annual sales exceeding $1,000.
This program is sponsored by the Oklahoma Historical Society and the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry. Over its 36-year history, 104 awards have been presented in Alfalfa County.
