An Oklahoma Centennial Farm award has been given to Derald and Linda Suffridge, owners of Paxton Farm near Mangum in Greer County. The announcement was made by Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer Lynda Ozan.
The farm has been in the family since 1897 when Marshall G. Paxton, the grandfather of the current owners, settled on the land. The Suffridges have continued to cultivate wheat and maintain pasture on the property.
To be eligible for a Centennial Farm or Ranch Award, a property must have been occupied by a family member for at least a century. Additionally, it must currently be operated or occupied by a family member or leased out by one. Other requirements include a minimum of 40 acres and gross annual sales of at least $1,000.
The Centennial Farm & Ranch Awards are sponsored by the Oklahoma Historical Society and the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry. Over its 36-year history, 33 awards have been presented in Greer County alone.
